Letter from Secretary Johnson

Dear Fellow Pennsylvanians:

The Pennsylvania Department of Health (Department) is proud to lead the Commonwealth in promoting healthy lifestyles and is committed to reducing the burden and impact of obesity throughout the state. In February 2003, Pennsylvania became the second state in the nation to release a state plan to prevent obesity. The Pennsylvania Nutrition and Physical Activity Plan to Prevent Obesity and Related Chronic Diseases is designed to systematically target public policy changes and changes to the physical environment, communities, and organizations to ultimately increase healthy eating and physical activity of all our citizens.

The Department formed and provides funding to the Pennsylvania Advocates for Nutrition and Activity (PANA) to assist in implementing Pennsylvania's plan. PANA seeks to simultaneously effect systems changes that promote active lifestyles and healthy food choices on three fronts: communities, schools, and healthcare settings.

The Pennsylvania Department of health is providing leadership to ensure that meaningful progress is made in the implementation of the plan. PANA and its state and community-based partners join with us in our efforts to make a positive impact on the health of all Pennsylvanians.

Sincerely,
Calvin B. Johnson, M.D., M.P.H.
