What is the Keystone Healthy Zone (KHZ) Campaign?

The Keystone Healthy Zone (KHZ) Schools Campaign is an annual program that publicly recognizes Pennsylvania schools for their commitment to creating and maintaining healthy school environments by equipping them with the tools and information they need to make healthy easy.

Enrolling in KHZ is as simple as completing an online enrollment form, which enables schools to assess and benchmark progress on school health and wellness practices. The information gathered in the enrollment form can be used to inform future planning and as a report to school decision makers. Plus, enrollment is FREE.

Keystone Healthy Zone Membership Awards

12345! Continuum

By enrolling in Keystone Healthy Zone, a school is demonstrating its commitment to make healthy easy. As part of this year's enrollment process, schools may select an award to make healthy change along the 12345! continuum, a newly developed guide for assessing energy balance (energy consumed through food = energy expended through activity). More details on 12345!

  1. One or more hours of physical activity
  2. Two hours or less of screen time
  3. Three meals a day with family and friends (with an emphasis on breakfast)
  4. Four or more glasses of water or no/low calorie beverages
  5. Five or more fruits and vegetables

As in years past, KHZ enrollment connects schools to a statewide network of school and community partners uniting to improve nutrition and physical activity options; gives them up-to-date information and materials, professional development opportunities, free or discounted education programs and equipment; and provides fun events to generate support among students, families, staff and community.

Youth Tobacco Survey

The Pennsylvania Department of Health, Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity added obesity-related questions to the 2006 Youth Tobacco Survey which was conducted during the fall and winter of the 2006-2007 school year. The obesity-related questions asked high school and middle school students’ questions about their nutrition and physical activity knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes. The highlights were compiled into a fact sheet intended to inform program staff, researchers, healthcare providers, local health departments, and community partners. This data will be used as baseline data.
