Keystone Healthy Zone Schools
Keystone Healthy Routes (KHR) is part of the Pennsylvania Advocates for Nutrition and Activity's (PANA) Keystone Healthy Zone Schools campaign. Supported by the Departments of Health and Education, the campaign provides an opportunity for schools to demonstrate their commitment to improving the health, well-being, and academic performance of their students. KHR is a component of the Healthy Zone Schools that creates safe walking and biking routes to encourage physical activity among students, improve air quality and make physical improvements in the school's community.
Governor's Safe Routes to School Initiative
In his 2004 budget speech, Governor Rendell proposed a comprehensive plan to revive Pennsylvania's older communities, retain and create new jobs while reclaiming PA's treasured resources for a better quality of life. This ideal is being realized through The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation's (PennDOT) Home Town Streets and Safe Routes to School programs (www.dot.state.pa.us/Penndot). These programs will aid Pennsylvania communities as they begin or grow their revitalization efforts and ensure safe walking and biking routes to schools.
