What are PANA's Keystone Healthy Zone Schools doing to promote good nutrition and physical activity?
Just a few of the good things happening:
- At Bedford Middle School in the Bedford Area School District, the school gym is open to students who want to walk at the end of their lunch period, and students are competing in a "Scoot Around Pennsylvania" contest to see which grade level can accumulate the most steps on their pedometers and be the first to "walk" across the state.
- At Jeannette McKee Elementary/Middle School, students are also tracking their steps on pedometers to 'walk' across the state, and are learning about state landmarks they'll pass in their social studies classes and how to convert steps to miles in math classes.
- At Fishing Creek Elementary School in the West Shore School District, the school held a Turkey Trot and Wellness Fair just before Thanksgiving, to help students focus on the importance of physical activity and healthy eating.
- At Neshaminy Middle School in Bucks County, students launched a healthy eating awareness campaign, complete with milk mustache posters with teachers and a series of television commercials featuring student actors that are shown on the school's TV channel.
- At Indian Valley High School, students created an indoor walking track with mileage posts, and some are participating in an after school exercise and nutrition program.
- At Neff Sixth Grade School in the Manheim School District in Lancaster county, students are treated to monthly taste-testings of healthy snacks tied into the nations they're studying in social studies and "walking" to via pedometer steps.
- At Hempfield School District, elementary students are greeted by Johnny Appleseed (their food service director) with baskets of fresh apples and applesauce-making lessons in their classrooms.
- At Ridley Park School District, the school nurse dons her inspector's costume and becomes the Vegetator, inspecting students' trays at lunchtime for incidents of healthy eating.
- At Lower Southampton Elementary in Bucks County, students are treated to once-a-month "Fitness Fridays," a day of activities focusing on healthy eating and physical activity - complete with the school's principal dressing as a bunch of grapes!
- At Fleetwood Elementary School in Berks County, a walking trail is being built for the after-school walking club, and teachers are being encouraged to offer healthier alternatives - including non-food items - for parties and birthday celebrations.
- At schools around the state … school nurses, physical educators, health teachers and food service directors are sending home information about good nutrition, healthy eating, and physical activity - as part of school newsletters, and in separate flyers.
- At schools around the state … local nutrition educators are making presentations to parents at PTA and PTO meetings about healthy snacks and the importance of good nutrition.
- At schools around the state … teachers and staff are finding creative ways to teach kids that being healthy is important … they know healthy kids make better learners!
* PANA wants to recognize all of its Keystone Healthy Zone Schools for their hard work! Schools: Please continue to notify us of your successes!
